Hollywood binoculars

I’m in kind of a grouchy mood, today, so I’m in the mood to pick o someone. Hollywood, to be exact. Why is it that with movie budgets in the many millions of dollars with the cast even getting some of those millions, the hero is outfitted with cheap binoculars or, when a spotting scope is in the script, you see a budget spotting scope ?

Camera basics

Most anyone who has used cameras, either film or digital cameras , knows that the world looks quite different through a camera lens and that much of the skill needed for a good photograph is a good “camera eye” which is simply being able to form an image in the mind of what a scene before you will look like through one lens or another. Beginners with a camera tend to fire and shoot when they see something that interests them, with little regard to composition or framing, but with experience, almost anyone can develop a good “camera eye” and the instant review capability of digital cameras makes this easier than ever before, plus there is always editing software to tweak a pic as needed.

Home, sweet north country, home

I may be getting older, but I am darn sure not slowing down. Just finished up a long four day weekend that included two great shows with the rock band and my fellow musicians, then off to our home, up north, for a couple of days of hard work to continue our remodeling and moving in. Whew! Sometimes I wonder where I get time to actually use my binoculars , spotting scopes , telescopes and digital cameras and be the outdoors gal I am.

Camera tip

For a photographer, I really don’t have that much to show for all the places I have been and lived. As much as I love working with both digital cameras and film cameras , one might expect I would have box upon box of old photos and many dozens of digital pics stored away on CDs or in my computer that are a record of each place I have lived or the highlights of my life. I don’t.

Confessions of a binocular astronomer

We’ll be up north, again, this coming weekend and with the moon in a waning crescent phase, I hope to do some astronomy, either with the astronomy binoculars or telescopes , though I am typically more in the mood for the binoculars when it comes time to observe. Not sure why I tend to reach for the binoculars, first, when I have a dark, clear sky; it’s just the opposite of the majority of astronomers who head for the telescope, first. Guess I am just a binocular astronomer by nature.

What is an astronomy binocular?

What is an astronomy binocular? Contrary to some advertising claims, there really are no hard and fast rules as to what is and what is not an astronomy binocular; it’s mostly a matter of where you want to draw the line. In fact, any binocular will allow you to see more of the night sky in terms of objects and detail seen than the unaided eye

Binoculars, digital cameras, telescopes at home

I’ve waited for this particular month of August with both anticipation and trepidation. The good news is that, by the end of the month, we will be mostly moved in to our new home in northern Wisconsin; the bad news is that we have to do all that moving, not to mention I have to squeeze in some playing dates, teach some last minute harmonica and astronomy lessons and, somewhere in all the mess, try to find time to do some bicycling, birdwatching , astronomy, photography and maybe even some fishing. One month does not seem long enough at times; at other times, it seems like an eternity.

Stargazing

Stargazing has been popular for many thousands of years, and the technology which we use to view the night sky may have developed significantly, but the essence of our primal fascination with stars has remained undiluted. Whilst our understanding of the stars and planets is now relatively sophisticated, much of the reason for our fascination with the night sky has remained the same – the mystical feeling of connectivity over time and generations which we feel as we gaze into the heavens, that special, timeless, eternal vibration. Astronomical telescopes used to be the preserve of the scientific and academic elite, but nowadays, the stars have been democratised and many people enjoy watching the stars from their own locales using their own equipment

Vacation cameras

It’s probably safe to say that more pics are taken, every year, with small digital cameras of the point and shoot variety than all other cameras put together. Yes, nothing beats a point and shoot digital camera for convenience – that’s hardly news to anyone – but as an old camera user it still amazes me just how good they can be when it comes to picture quality. No, I’m not saying these small digital cameras will ever replace DSLRs or my beloved film cameras, but point and shoots can do a remarkable job in the right hands and if you keep your expectations within the range of what digital point and shoot cameras can achieve

Airport and binoculars

Believe it or not, there was a day when airports were considered hotspots for birding, at least for some species of birds that need wide-open country, such as Larks, raptors of all kinds, (especially Burrowing Owls in some areas) and other species often not otherwise found in an area. Of course, that was before 9-11 and all the security that followed. Today, pull out binoculars at an airport fence and you may spend the day with the security folks rather than the birds

Features to Look for in Astronomical Telescopes

If you’re after astronomical telescopes then you can look forward to years of star gazing enjoyment, and if you make the right choice you’ll be more than happy with your purchase. The only problem, particularly for those new to the astronomy field, will be knowing what to look for in these items.

Airport security and binoculars

Bill and I are flying out to Utah, tomorrow, for my family reunion, which we hold at various locations around the country, every couple of years. This time the location is Park City, Utah. Can’t wait to see all my family, of course, not to mention the wide open spaces of the West I dearly miss, but I am not looking forward to flying, again

Digital camera escape

Spent the weekend, up north at our new home, though it was more work than play with all the remodeling we have been doing. We are replacing an old and smelly carpet with a beautiful tile floor in our basement family room; Bill is laying the tile and I am doing the grout! Okay, I didn’t even know what grout was until I met Bill, but Bill and I believe in doing things, together and no way am I going to be left out when it comes to a project in our new home

Astronomy binocular challenge

In my six years in the big city of Chicago and, more recently, a year in suburban Milwaukee, I never gave up on astronomy , though the severe light pollution often made it a challenge to continue using my astronomy binoculars , let alone my telescopes . After all, I was used to some very good, very dark skies, prior to my arrival in Chicago. To say it was a blow to my astronomy is putting it, mildly.

Telescope time

One of the very few disadvantages of being an avid astronomer is that you are a slave to the vagaries of weather; blessed, indeed, are those nights when the skies are dark, clear and seeing conditions favorable for serious work with astronomy binoculars or telescopes . I can attest to the fact that, in some parts of the country these nights can be few and far between when the weather gets stuck in a moisture pattern. We astronomers take what we can get, as always, though I suspect our spouses worry about our sanity when we buy telescopes and telescope accessories and then watch all this gear collect dust, so to speak, as we wait, night after night, for a clear sky

Cameras for waterfalls and fall color

Bill and I have been working, feverishly, to get all the remodeling done in our northern Wisconsin home, so that we can be settled in, permanently, come September, in time for the fall color season. Leaves turn color, early, that far north and in some years, it’s over when you turn the calendar page to October
